From Passion to Success: Young Caymanians Can Make Their Mark

Elizabeth Larsen’s journey from hobby baker to award-nominated entrepreneur shows how young Caymanians can turn passions into successful ventures. The owner of Jazzy Cakes is up for “Best Traditional Caribbean Bakes” at the 2025 Caribbean Baking Awards, thanks to her signature butter cakes. “I was super thrilled to be nominated… It’s inspiring to see the talented bakers across the islands,” she shared with the Cayman Compass.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Larsen’s business started in 2018 when she hosted fundraisers to cover her son’s medical expenses. Afterward, demand for her cakes grew, and she saw an opportunity. “Since I had quit my job to stay home with him, it was serendipitous,” she said. Named after her daughter Jasmine, Jazzy Cakes allowed her to earn a living while being present for her family.

Blending Tradition with Innovation

Key to Larsen’s success has been infusing her cakes with local flavors, like her award-winning cassava cake. “I’ve loved baking since I was a child, learning from my mother and grandmother,” she said. By blending tradition with unique twists, she’s created a brand that resonates with locals and visitors alike.

Lessons for Young Entrepreneurs

Originally trained as a goldsmith, Larsen’s pivot to baking shows the power of adaptability. “I never planned to be a baker, but when the opportunity came, I dove in and never looked back.” Her advice? “Believe with your whole heart that you will succeed. Trust yourself and trust the journey.”
